What a token is
A quick sidestep from Claude Code, because the currency of AI is tokens.
A token is a piece of a word, so a short word is one, a long one is two or three, and a page of plain text is around five hundred.
Eight words, as you would count them.
Ten tokens, as it counts them.
Everything is counted in tokens.
What you type, what it reads from your folder and what it writes back all count, and your plan gives you so many in a five-hour window and so many in a week.
It matters because the rest of this stage is about spending them well.
A bigger model spends more to think harder, a long chat carries every earlier token with every new message, and a file it reads is tokens too, so the word comes up in every part from here.
