BACK TO THE COURSE

Stage one, session one

Claude Code

Your bearings. What it is and what it can do, which Claude, what you have used, chats, and when it asks.

1.03

Which Claude

There is more than one Claude, and they trade thinking against speed.

Claude Code shows which one you are on at the bottom of the prompt box, and /model switches it and keeps your choice for new chats.

Haiku

quick and cheap

Sonnet

the everyday one

Opus

thinks hard

Drives on Pro

Fable

thinks hardest

Drives on Max

QuickerThinks harder

The model

What it is for

Haiku

The quick cheap one, for small mechanical jobs where the thinking is already done.

Sonnet

The everyday one. Fast, and good enough for nearly all of it, so it is the one the driver hands work to later in the course.

Opus

Thinks hard at a price most people can run all day. On the Pro plan this is the one that drives.

Fable

The biggest, and the slowest and dearest, for the work where judgement matters most. On the Max plan this is the one that drives.

Set it once and leave it.

Opus if you are on the Pro plan, and Fable if you are on the Max plan.

As you go up the list each one uses more tokens for the same question, though the cleverer one often gets there in fewer goes.

Later in the course we will go through how to get the main, bigger model to hand work on to the smaller models.

How hard it thinks is a separate dial, and the next part is that.
